  • It’s a simple one, but talk in full sentences to your toddler

  • Use big words—children love them—and be specific. I.e. cardinal and daffodils, instead of bird and flowers.

  • Sing songs (it’s okay if you can’t sing, your child doesn’t mind)

  • Recite poems

  • Read together


For your toddler, books should be:

  • Easily accessible and available throughout the day

  • Treated with respect (Model how to turn pages gently)

  • Choose books with simple story lines based on reality. Here’s a great list.

  • Reading your own book in front of your child shows that reading is something you value and love
